TARO NASU is pleased to announce Lawrence Weiner’s solo exhibition EMPTIED UNTIL FULL.

EMPTIED UNTIL FULL is the third Lawrence Weiner exhibition held at TARO NASU. We are pleased to announce this show is made in cooperation with the Lawrence Weiner Estate, the first exhibition with us since the artist’s passing in 2021.

The exhibition will include a special display of Weiner’s Declaration of Intent, 1968:

1.THE ARTIST MAY CONSTRUCT THE WORK
2.THE WORK MAY BE FABRICATED
3.THE WORK NEED NOT BE BUILT

EACH BEING EQUAL AND CONSISTENT WITH THE INTENT OF THE ARTIST
THE DECISION AS TO CONDITION RESTS WITH
THE RECEIVER UPON THE OCCASION OF RECEIVERSHIP

In 1968, Weiner began creating his works in language, which became his primary material. He referred to these works as sculpture, determining that an artwork in language is a thought process, in three-dimensions. The Declaration outlines the parameters of how the work can be made; that it need not necessarily be built in order to exist; and that whoever possesses the work holds a responsibility in the decision of presentation. The last piece of the Declaration says that the parties involved in the artwork’s existence are of equal status.

Weiner measured the breadth and depth of his subject matter through sculptural language. His work presents viewers with a structure that makes it attainable to anyone. Weiner shifts responsibility to the viewer to complete the work, believing that in order for a culture to be significant each person is equally responsible for fulfilling it.

Along with the artist’s Declaration, TARO NASU will present four of Weiner’s sculptures, two drawings, and a special edition work, all of which tender an experience of Weiner’s worldview.
