TARO NASU is pleased to announce the exhibition “gesture, form, technique IV”, which is aiming to offer the platform to consider the relationship between the modernism design and art.

The exhibition features the furniture co-designed by Le Corbusier and his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret. Le Corbusier worked on the city planning of Chandigarh, India in the 1950s. It is known that Le Corbusier worked in collaboration with other architects and designers in many projects. Likewise, he progressed the Chandigarh city plan with Pierre Jeanneret, who was a designer as well. This exhibition shows the furniture designed for the Capitol Complex (High Court, Secretariat Building, Palace of Assembly), the central institution of Chandigarh. In addition, masterpieces at 1950s French modernism, designed by Jean Prouve´, Charlotte Perriand, Serge Mouille and others, who were closely related to Le Corbusier, will be on display.

Many artists have been inspired by the achievements that Le Corbusier and Jeanneret had built. Donald Judd (1928-1994), one of the leading American contemporary artists, conceived Minimalism Sculpture on the premise of their work. Liam Gillick (1964-) ‘s practice is focusing on the aesthetics of social systems with modes of production. He plans architectural furniture and fixtures, by mixing art history and poetic texts. Mika Tajima’s pursuit exists in the interaction between human and the environment, companies and factories, productions like the chairs, Jacuzzi. This exhibition shows works of Le Corbusier and Jeanneret and approaches in the extension of their attempt together.

Opened in 2005. Aiming to communicate the role that Jean Prouve and Charlotte Perriand played in postwar Japan, it was Asia’s first gallery to specialize in exhibiting the furniture of French designers. A spotlight focused on the works of Junzo Sakakura, Kenzo Tange and Sori Yanagi, all architects and designers from the same time period. Cooperating with national and international galleries and art museums, our activities include exhibition planning, research and the popularization of Japanese design.
