Takashi Homma’s seventh solo exhibition at TARO NASU shows his works themed on the city of Tokyo.
The release of his photo book, “TOKYO SUBURBIA” in 1998, brought Homma instant worldwide recognition. It captured scenes of Tokyo for what it is and was once described by the sociologist Shinji Miyadai as the “endless everyday” — scenes of the city and its people just soaking in their happiness or sitting in their comfort zone.
In 2015, Homma chose Tokyo as his subject again. It was a 6-year series project with Casa BRUTUS magazine, where he shot photos of the city changing in the run up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

This exhibition displays the legendary series “TOKYO SUBURBIA” and the series “TOKYO NEW SCAPES” in the same space to show how the monstrous city of Tokyo changed. What lay beyond the peaceful everyday lives, which were gained in exchange for the feeling of being trapped, and were supposed to last forever? What history was made in Tokyo for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics? Over half a century after the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, said to be the most iconic event held during Japan’s rapid economic growth period, Homma’s camera captured the answers.

This exhibition is set to run partially overlapping the period of his solo exhibition “Revolution 9: Homma Takashi”, held through to January 21, 2024, at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. Intended to compare the past and future of Homma’s world, this exhibition at TARO NASU exhibits his works that feature different expressions from those showing his recent commitment to the camera obscura, to present the viewer with the broadness of his world of works.
